Given the temperature hit 87 degrees this weekend (in Atlanta), the idea of moisturizing my skin was hardly at the top of my list as I worked through my garden. But, when I asked our staff what would be the best topic for today’s blog entry, they responded overwhelmingly that its time to talk about moisturization. Glad I asked.
Now I’m a planner, but I often don’t think too far out ahead. But our staff does – thank goodness. They said we are already getting calls from customers who are starting to experience dry skin from cooler temperatures and low humidity. At first, I thought this was a bit hard to believe, but as I worked through the garden and realized what a few crops were still “on the vines”, I realized this would probably be the last batch since nightly temps have dipped down in the 60′s and are expected to begin trending down as we move into fall, shorter days and the beginning of footbal season.
For many of us, dry skin is just something we all deal with; for other others it can be a chronic problem that leads to a variety of related skin problems and brings with symptoms that may include flaking, cracking, skin rashes, and painful itching.
Surprisingly, even when the weather is warm and humidity is high, those that suffer with chronically dry skin may still have problems. Most often these problems are related to under-producing sebaceous or sweat glands. Typically these glands secrete natural oils that help moisten tissue. Heredity, illness and medications can affect natural secretions and some skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema will exasterbate already sensitive or dry skin.
As they say, the time is now to begin considering your options, especially if dry, cold air inflames your skin conditions. For our customers, we have several recommendations (of course, we’re a skin care manufacturer?!)
First, if you are looking for a general moisturizer with no fragrance, we recommend Nourish®’s Emu Oil Lotion. As a general purpose moisturizer it gets “5 stars” by our customers – it goes on smooth and absorbs quickly. It has several natural oils that don’t leave your skin feeling greasy and penetrates deep into the skin (many products don’t by the way) to get the maximum moisturizing effect.
Second, if you want moisture + skin firming/tightening benefits, we recommend Skin Tight®. Skin Tight® is one of the best selling body firming lotions available. In addition to being a great moisturizer, it helps tighten flabby, loose or sagging skin. It’s used by young and old for firming and is especially popular for those on weight-loss programs for tightening loose skin after trimming-down.
If you’re looking for a lotion/cream for your hands, our most popular and effective product is Younger Hands® Cream. While the name belies its benefits, it does have firming and lightening benefits as well as being a super-moisturizer. Its very popular with folks in their 40′s, 50′s and 60′s (and on up) because it helps smooth wrinkled hands while fading dark spots – liver spots, age spots, etc. But…it is equally popular with younger folks as a general hand lotion for fighting dryness during the winter.
I’m sure the topic of moisturizing your skin will come up again several times as we move into the fall and winter, but this is a good starting place for those who are concerned. Later in the year we’ll discuss several “tips and recommendations” keeping your skin from drying-out…stay tuned!
